Visiting East of the Cascades

Oregon Summer Road Trip! Traversing the state north to south, Interstate 5 makes driving to your favorite summer destinations and events convenient. From St. Helens in the far north through Portland and south through Salem to Medford and Ashland traveling by automobile along I-5 is a breeze. Theater fans be sure to take in your favorite plays at Ashland’s Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Music fans enjoy one of the world's largest mystic music gatherings at Eugene’s Faerieworlds 2012 Summer Celebration; and Salem, the capital city, showcases Oregon’s diversity at World Beat Festival the end of June. It’s the season to load up family and friends and enjoy an Oregon summer road trip.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s summer schedule is at its peak. Ashland hosts the OSF through November 4th, at the downtown Oregon Shakespeare Festival campus, including the Agnes Bowmer Theatre, New Theatre and Elizabethan Stage at Allen Pavilion. The 2012 season brings Henry V, As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet to the stage, along with other plays and Shakespeare performances.

During summer, the OSF courtyard stage hosts free pre-theater entertainment. A diversity of performers from dancers to jugglers and musicians perform evenings, except Mondays, at 7:15 pm. Called the Green Show, these performances run through October 14th. After August 7th, shows begin at 6:45 pm. Summer visitors to Ashland also enjoy Festival Noons, June 19th through September 2nd. Festival Noons feature talks with OSF company members, lectures and Artist demonstrations.

Just off Interstate 5, less than five-miles north of Medford, is Central Point, home of Jackson County Fair. Held at The Expo on Peninger Road, the Jackson County Fair is July 17th through 22nd. With all the traditions of a summer fair, enjoy exhibits, livestock auctions and the carnival, complete with midway games and rides. Headliners for the concerts include Bret Michaels, LeAnn rimes and Cody Simpson among the stars.

Eugene in Central Oregon hosts Faerieworlds, the 2012 Summer Celebration, July 27th through 29th. Faerieworlds takes place east of Interstate 5 at Mt. Pisgah in Howard Buford County Recreation Area. The Northwest’s premier mythic music and arts festival, Faerieworlds features over 150 vendors at the amazing Mythic Marketplace, along with internationally acclaimed artists and performers, including Donovan the 2012 headliner.

August visitors to Eugene don’t miss the 2012 Eugene Celebration. Marking the 30th anniversary, the festival is the weekend of August 24th through the 26th. Billed as southern Willamette Valley’s largest civic events, Eugene Celebration features the Eugene Celebration Mile Run/Walk, kicking off the Saturday morning parade, a classic car show, and Triathlon Eugene: the Oregon Challenge.

Salem, the Oregon state capital, hosts the 15th Anniversary World Beat Festival showcasing the diversity of Oregon’s cultures and communities. Always the last weekend in June, the 2012 festival is June 30th and July 1st. Organized by the Salem Multicultural Institute, events feature over 120 cultural performance, dragon boat races, and cultural exhibitions and vendors. Celebrate Oregon's diversity in Salem this summer.
