Visiting East of the Cascades
Communities along Interstate 5 each offer an array of unique charms, making every one a must-stop for road travelers. From Ashland, Medford, and Grants Pass in the south to Eugene and Salem and into Portland, on the state's northern border, the I-5 Corridor is bursting with character and culture year-round. Still, the wide variety of events, festivals, and ways to get active argue for a summertime visit to the region.
University of Oregon students are out on summer break, but Matthew Knight Arena, on UO's Eugene campus, plays host to some of the biggest names in music this summer. On Thursday, July 31st, Rod Stewart and Santana bring decades of hits to the arena, before Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers do the same on August 7th. Relative newcomer Bruno Mars has wasted no time in sending numerous hits of his own into the stratosphere. He brings his Moonshine Jungle Tour to Matthew Knight Arena the very next week, on August 11th.
Salem, midway between Eugene and Portland, is Oregon's capital city, and it'd be hard to find a better place along the I-5 Corridor to celebrate this Fourth of July. Enjoy America's Pastime with the future MLB stars of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and stick around after the game for fireworks, live entertainment, and more. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
Serious cyclists participating in the annual Triple Crown Series head to Westfir, 45 minutes south of Eugene via Oregon Route 58/Willamette Highway, for the Tour of Aufderheide. The second event in the Triple Crown Series, the Tour of Aufderheide gives riders a choice of three routes of varying difficulties. The 100-mile Alpine route, the 64-mile Box Canyon Route, and the 10-to-40-mile Kiahanie route each wind through lush woods, along the Upper Willamette and McKenzie rivers, and past impressive, towering cliffs.
Roadies who haven't gotten enough head to Cottage Grove on September 20th for Cycle the Lakes 2014. Starting at Bohemia Park, this event offers three course lengths as well – a 32-mile route, a 67-mile route, and a 102-mile route.
Albany, northeast of Corvallis, draws all walks of life from near and far with the 2014 ATI Northwest Art & Air Festival. The sky above Timber Linn Park fills with hot air balloons as artists demonstrate their works on the fields below. Food vendors line the park and kids' fun abounds as well. Best of all, the boys Bachman & Turner are back in town and Blue Oyster Cult give fans as much cowbell as they can handle as the two bands deliver headlining performances for the festival.
