SUMMER IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN OREGON
Travel Tips for Visitors to the East of the Cascades | Summer 2016
The diverse landscape east of the Oregon Cascades offers just as a diverse an array of things for visitors to see and do this season. From wooded, mountain-town respites like Government Camp and La Pine to the farmlands of Ontario and Baker City, all sorts of special events, festivals, outdoor activities, and family-friendly fun await summer visitors.
In Hood River, warming weather means it’s time to get back out on the Columbia River for a variety of wet and wild fun – and concentrated gusts through the Columbia River Gorge make for especially good windsurfing conditions. The Gorge Windfest, hosted by the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association, is a local staple, drawing big crowds, throughout June, July, and August, with highlights like King of the Hook, the Beach Bash BBQ, and Rio Vista Grand Slam.
Cyclists pedal for La Grande, in eastern Oregon, where they can be a part of the 2016 Grand Tour Spring Ride, May 6th through 8th. It’s a chance to explore some of the most scenic sides of the state along the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway. Register now and start training – the three-day ride covers 134 miles.
The Pacific Northwest is known for its beer and, on June 18th, visitors to La Grande can sample the suds of more than 20 different eastern Oregon breweries at the Union County Fairgrounds. Join the party – the afternoon is set to include live music throughout, local crafts, great local food, Q&A’s with brewers, and more, starting at noon.
Baker City and the nearby Hells Canyon Wilderness are heaven for bikers, July 7th through 11th, when the 2016 Hell's Canyon Motorcycle Rally welcomes riders from all over the country. It's an opportunity to party with like-minded motorcyclists, browse countless vendors, and more before heading out on rides on trails like the Ogre, the Little Dragon, and the Tamarack Trail.
June 24th through 26th, athletes and their families and friends gather in Sunriver, not far from La Pine, Sisters, Redmond, and Prineville, for the 2016 Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. Known as the "jewel of multi-sport events in the Northwest," the annual tradition includes everything from Tour de Crest Bike Tours to long-course and Olympic triathlons, endurance and Olympic duathlons, and marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids' runs – all in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training fundraising efforts.
