Oregon State University, began as Corvallis Academy in 1856 as the area's first community school. In 1858, this Corvallis area school was named Corvallis College. In 1868, the Oregon Legislative Assembly designated the college as the Corvallis State Agriculture College and began granting Bachelor of Science degrees, Bachelor of Arts degrees and Master of Arts degrees. In 1927, the name changed again to Oregon State Agriculture College and then again in 1937, to Oregon State College.
This public research university was finally named Oregon State University in 1961. The university is one of the seventy-three land-grant universities in the country. The university is also designated as a space-grant, sea-grant and sun-grant university, along with with Cornell University, as the only two in the country.
