Mt. Bachelor Ski Area, located west of Bend in the Oregon Cascades, encompasses over 3,600 acres. Located on the north face of Mount Bachelor, this ski area is the largest in the state and the second-largest in America, on one mountain. Since 1958, skiers have enjoyed carving into the snow on the mountain. The ski area has become an official training resort for several Winter Olympic athletes and professionals, who train at the mountain.
With 7 express quad lifts, 3 triple chair lifts, 2 tubing tows and a magic carpet, serving 71 ski runs, there's plenty of places to have fun. Newberry National Volcanic Monument, located near Bend, is within Deschutes National Forest in the Oregon Cascades region. The monument protects the Newberry Volcano and the 50,000 acres of land, lakes, geologic features and lava flows around it. Newberry continues to be very geothermally active.
At 7,895 feet, Paulina Peak is the highest point in the monument. Alpine lakes, East Lake and Paulina Lake, are on either side of the summit and are great spots for trout fishing.
