Oregon State Capitol

The Oregon State Capitol was built in Salem in 1938, after the first two Capitol buildings were destroyed by fire. It was the fourth newest capitol in America. This working Capitol building contains the offices of the Governor, Treasurer and Secretary of State, as well as the state legislature. With the addition of photovoltaic panels on the building in 2002, the Capitol became the first one that produces solar power. A portion of the power is used to light the 22ft tall bronze Oregon Pioneer statue, on top of the building.

While in the metro Portland area, join in the Historical Building Tour, the Legislative Tour or the Tower Tour. Be sure to take a moment to walk the grounds to see the Wall of Water and Sprague Fountain and then visit the Capitol Gift Shop to browse the selection of Oregon products and locally-made items. Silver Falls State Park

Silver Falls State Park, 20 miles east of Salem, is a lush recreation area in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. Lace up your hiking boots to trek along the Canyon Trail to view one of the park's beautiful 10 waterfalls.

Hike along the Silver Creek to reach South Falls, the park's most visited falls, and see its 177-foot high cascade. Western Oregon University

Western Oregon University, located in Monmouth, was established in 1856 by the Oregon pioneers that forged across the Oregon Trail. It is the oldest higher education institution in the Oregon University system.
