McNary Dam

McNary Dam

Opened to partial activation in 1954, then to full activation in 1957, the McNary Dam is a major structure in Umatilla County.

As you explore northeastern Oregon and cities like Hermiston and Pendleton, you may discover yourself driving near the McNary Dam – keep your camera ready and snap a few pictures for the photo album.

McNary Dam is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and it impounds water from the Columbia River.

One of the most unique and forward thinking features of the McNary Dam – it's completely self sustaining.

With 22 spillway gates and a total capacity of 980 megawatts, the McNary Dam is a vital piece to life in Umatilla County.

Pendleton River Parkway

Running alongside the Umatilla River, the Pendleton River Parkway is a three-mile recreational trail, offering a convenient way for visitors to enjoy the great outdoors of eastern Oregon without ever leaving Pendleton. For years, visitors and residents alike utilize the trail for everything from a relaxing walk to a brisk run to a scenic bike ride.

While your walking shoes are still on, enjoy one of the other walking trails at Pendleton parks, including the McKay Neighborhood Park, Pendleton Community Park, and Rice-Blakey Park. Moreover, summertime fun in Pendleton includes a day at the Pendleton Aquatic Center. Kids love slipping down the tube slides and swimming in the three pools.

Pendleton Round-Up

Since 1910, the Pendleton Round-Up has been a staple attraction for rodeo fans in northeast Oregon. During the second week each September, the Pendleton Round-Up features classic rodeo events, like steer roping, barrel racing, bareback riding, and calf roping. The Pendleton Round-Up is an officially recognized stop on the PRCA Tour

The Saturday before the rodeo kicks off, check out the Dress Up Parade, where you'll see a variety of local youth groups show off their hand-made floats, parade style. The Friday during Round-Up Week you'll find the Westward Ho! parade. Because of the popularity, the Pendleton Round-Up also features PBR events, like the Happy Canyon Arena Rodeo

Umatilla National Forest

Utamilla National Forest

Utamilla National Forest

Sitting on 1.4 million acres, the Umatilla National Forest preserves many of eastern Oregon's diverse landscapes, including areas near the Blue Mountains and the city of Pendleton.

Passed by Lewis and Clark during their early 19th century journey to the Pacific, the forest features narrow ridges and lush grasslands, ranging in elevation from 1,600 to 1,800 feet.

Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to explore the 2,000 miles of forest roads and 715 miles of trails, either on foot, mountain bike, or vehicle.
