Oregon’s Rose City, Portland, celebrates its official festival starting mid-May. As preparations for the 2013 Portland Rose Festival are underway, there is plenty of fun and entertainment in the greater Portland area. Gardener’s be sure to plant the official 2013 rose; named Pop the Cork, sales benefit the Portland Rose Festival Foundation. The Portland Trailblazers are in full season play at the Rose Garden Arena, WHL hockey is also in full swing at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Garden with the Portland Winterhawks. Jeld-Wen Field hosts MSL Timber soccer preseason in February, with the regular 2013 season beginning March.
To the west of Portland, the pleasant suburb of Forest Grove is home to the Theatre In the Grove. Just 25-miles from downtown Portland, the Grove Theatre offers a full calendar of 2013 performances. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest opens February 22nd, followed by April’s performance of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Enjoy a casual evening of theater in Forest Grove.
Portland’s Rose Garden Arena is alive with Portland Trail Blazer action. The city’s favored sons play their 2012 – 2013 regular season home games at the Rose Garden through April 17th when they host the Golden State Warriors. It’s hard to beat the excitement of a Trail Blazers game – be a part of it for a night, the Rose Garden Arena is on the east side of the Willamette River across the Broadway Bridge.
A five-year Portland tradition, the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit comes to the Rose City April 20th. The Hoop Summit features the world’s top upcoming basketball players. See the best US high school players take on a World Select Team of players 19-years-old and younger. With many players from the summit now playing in the NBA, the Nike Hoop Summit is the place to see the next generation of great basketball players.
May brings the selections for the 2013 Rose Festival Court, with festival events kicking off with the May 19th – don't miss the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. With Portland bands along the 13.1-mile course, the entertainment alone is worth a visit. The start and finish is at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park with a course taking runners across the Hawthorne Bridge, past the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, through Portland’s diverse northeast neighborhoods, and back across the Steel Bridge.
The Rose Festival CityFair begins May 25th, Memorial Day weekend 2013. For three consecutive weekends, the fair features rides, attractions and fireworks shows. Waterfront Park comes filled with activity including the Rogue CityFair Pub, the Funtastic Carnival, and the new MegaDrop ride. Celebrate spring in the Rose City at CityFair.
