Fall in Portland and the Willamette Valley features a bounty of fresh, locally harvested produce, swaths of autumn colors, and the beginnings of a festive holiday season. From Forest Grove in the north, to Salem in the south, Willamette Valley wineries celebrate Thanksgiving, opening their doors for a long weekend of tastings and special events.
Montinore Estate, and David Hill Vineyards & Winery in the Forest Grove area are open for Thanksgiving travelers offering tastings of their best reserves. In the south of the Willamette Valley, Honeywood Winery in Salem offers tastings of over 40 wines, as well a holiday season gift packs – a delightful way to do holiday shopping.
The town of Newberg is conveniently surrounded by several wineries, and the Chehalem Tasting Room located in downtown Newburg is open for Wine Country Thanksgiving.
The Portland Art Museum NW Film Center hosts the 40 Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival November 8th through 17th. The 2013 festival screens more than 400 works from Oregon and surrounding northwestern states and provinces. Look for the Best of the Northwest touring program in 2014 to check out the best films from the festival.
Called Portland’s Living Room, Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown is a community gathering place. The home of the City of Portland’s holiday tree, the 2013 75-foot tall Douglas Fir arrives at Pioneer Square on November 15th, when Santa makes his first visit of the season along with the Dickens Carolers and the Beat Goes on Marching Band. Head downtown on November 29th for the official tree lighting ceremony, holiday sing-along, and shopping.
A Portland tradition, the 2013 Tuba Christmas celebrates the 13th year of Concerts at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Saturday, December 14th. Everyone willing to pick up a Tuba is welcome. Young and old alike may check-in at the Lincoln High School Cafeteria at 9 a.m. that morning for practice before moving on to the performance.
Metro Portland showcases local arts and culture at the 2014 Fertile Ground Festival. Presented by the Portland Area Theatre Alliance, Fertile Ground is a citywide festival of new works from January 23rd to February 2nd. A celebration of the coming season of new growth, Fertile Ground showcases Portland’s creative culture and native talent.
