STRAY FROM THE BEATEN PATH TO DRINK IN PORTLAND'S PERSONALITY
Travel Tips for Portland Visitors | Fall-Winter 2014
Overcast and damp yet anything but dreary, Portland’s pulse is its unique personality. Visitors know stopping into Voodoo Doughnut to taste a maple bacon masterpiece is a must, Elephant Park and the International Rose Test Garden are popular landmarks, and of course the Portland Trail Blazers continue to draw NBA fans to the Moda Center a few nights a week through early April. Still, this fall and winter, there are more ways than ever to dig in a little further and soak up the Rose City state of mind.
With more brewpubs per capita than any other city in the country, Portland enjoys the nickname "Beervana" and perhaps no place in town better represents the indie spirit PDX is known for while offering as many ways to unwind with a meal and a mug than the Hawthorne District in southeast Portland.
Bagdad Theater & Pub
The walkable strip is lined with an eclectic mix of boutiques, cafes, and iconic, one-of-a-kind attractions like Bagdad Theater & Pub, where visitors can catch new movie releases in a Hollywood-Golden-Age setting before sipping some suds at the McMenamins brewpub, located inside.
The 2014 Holiday Ale Fest is a special gift to the beer lovers of Portland. Having garnered a reputation as the Pacific Northwest's premier winter beer tasting venue, the annual event will showcase over 50 winter brews at the Pioneer Courthouse Square, December 3rd through 7th.
Salem, 40 minutes to the south, is home to the Redhawk Winery. This year, the winery hosts the 2014 Before & After Thanksgiving Festivals, which feature expanded wine and barrel tastings and a food line with musical entertainment and special holiday offers. Don't forget to try Betty's much-anticipated butternut squash soup. The fun goes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. November 22nd and 23rd, and then again on the 28th through 30th.
