FALL FUN FOR FAMILIES IN PORTLAND
Travel Tips for Portland Visitors | Fall 2015
Fall is a fine time to find a sense of the personality Portland and surrounding communities are known for. From St. Helens to Salem, indoor and outdoor activities abound – this season’s calendar of special events and festivals promises something for the whole family, and Portland's countless one-of-a-kind attractions are waiting to be the highlight of your fall visit.
Should the rain dampen a day outdoors this season, families won’t have a hard time finding edifying and immersive experiences in PDX cultural focal points like Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry. You can also dig into Portland history by taking a guided tour of the Pittock Mansion, the 22-room former estate of Henry Pittock, longtime publisher of The Oregonian
The Pittock Mansion
Pacific Northwest filmmakers amass in downtown Portland for the 2015 Northwest Film Makers Festival – a week's worth of screenings, workshops, and juried award shows – November 12th through 17th. The 42nd Northwest Filmmakers' Festival events are held in venues throughout town, but the Northwest Film Center is the focal point.
The Holiday Ale Fest returns to Courthouse Square in downtown PDX, December 2nd through 6th. The popular annual event has garnered a reputation as the West Coast’s premier winter tasting venue, and the 2015 iteration boasts over 50 specially brewed holiday ales, along with holiday decorations and cozy heat lamps.
Families visiting Forest Grove won’t want to miss a chance to treat the kids to the 2015 Holiday in the Grove event on December 5th. It’s a full day of family-friendly fun, featuring hayrides, an arts and crafts fair, and even a chance to sit down with Jolly Old Saint Nicholas himself.
Oregon City visitors get into the spirit of the season by embarking on a journey down the 2015 Christmas Fantasy Trail. From December 2nd through 31st, the Wetzel Family Farm invites you on a spirited stroll, where you’ll encounter a 40-foot castle, maze, tunnel, suspension bridge, and more fantastic attractions along the way. Warm up around the bonfire after your walk – the nighttime fun starts at 6 p.m. each night.
