SUMMER FUN IN THE PDX
Travel Tips for Portland Visitors | Summer 2016
Summertime brings the longest days of the year to Portland. In July, the sun shines long into the evening hours, and PDX residents know to make the most of the extra daylight. This season, a variety of family-friendly festivals and special events line the calendar and visitors are invited to be a part of it all.
It’s the best time of year to visit the Portland Saturday Market, which transforms the Old Town/Chinatown area into a vibrant agora of fine, handmade arts, crafts, and uniquely Oregon goods, every weekend through the end of the year. Bring the whole family – this summer’s special activities for kids include presentations by the The Oregon Zoo, Tears of Joy Puppet Theater, Amazama and more.
Last Thursday on Alberta, the monthly Alberta Arts District festival, takes place on the last Thursday of every month this year, but in the summer, Alberta Street, between 15th and 30th avenues, is closed down and the festival truly flourishes. Browse the work of local artists and artisans, listen to live music, enjoy local food and drink offerings, and get a sense of just who is really keeping Portland weird.
Or head to Tom McCall Waterfront Park, July 3rd through 5th, and taste treats like “cinnamon elephant ears” while letting the smooth sounds of sweet sorrow soak in as the 2016 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival draws big crowds with performers like Maceo Parker and Lee Fields.
Sports fans know summertime means baseball. Portland may not have an MLB team of its own, but that doesn’t mean fans can’t spend a summer day enjoying America’s Pastime. The future big-league stars of the Hillsboro Hops round the bases at Hillsboro Stadium through the end of August. The excitement level is high this season as the Hops look to defend their Northwest League Championship and Portland, Forest Grove, and Tigard visitors enjoy especially quick access to the action.
Of course, Oregonians don’t leave all the athleticism to the pros – they’re already training for a couple of major challenges this summer. The 2016 Hagg Lake Triathlon challenges participants with an Olympic-level course in Forest Grove on July 11th. Then, the 2016 Hood-to-Coast Marathon sends relay runners all the way from Mt. Hood to Seaside on August 28th and 29th. Join the race or simply come for the fun – the after party features a beer and wine garden, live music, award ceremonies, and more.
