Visiting Metro Portland
Travel greater Portland, it's time for summer fun. Downtown Portland dominates the southwest quadrant of the city. Located within the Free Rail Zone, getting around downtown is easy and free. Pioneer Place keeps shoppers busy with nearly 100 of America’s most popular stores. The Portland Art Museum is located downtown on Park Avenue, and Portland Center for the Performing Arts is on Broadway. Visit the Pearl District between downtown and the Willamette River. Set in Portland’s northwest quadrant, this revitalized industrial zone is now full of hip restaurants, and shops. Across the Willamette River in northeast Portland is the Lloyd District where you’ll find the Rose Quarter, Rose Garden Arena and the Oregon Convention Center.
With over 95 distinct neighborhoods, exploring Portland can be seemingly endless. Three monthly art walks cover many of the galleries and turn neighborhood sidewalks into performance venues and parties. Old Town hosts the First Thursday Gallery Walk encompassing exhibits and shows in downtown Portland and the Pearl District. The Last Thursday Art Walk finds you on Northeast Alberta Street browsing new shows, while music, food and performances fill the street. The large Central Eastside Arts District hosts’ First Friday gallery strolls through four organized areas with local shops, restaurants and bars collaborating in the event. Portland’s art scene alone can keep one busy.
Portland’s music scene is as dynamic as its art. The Rose Quarter showcases world famous performers year round. See Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney in July, Josh Groban in August, take the family to Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily Circus in September - don’t miss the Lord of the Rings in Concert in October. Small venues like Doug Fir Lounge on E Burnside Street and The Artistery on SE Division Street are great for catching emerging local musicians.
Tigard, just southwest of Portland is home to Broadway Rose Theater Company and its two performance venues, the New Stage Auditorium and the Deb Fennel Auditorium. Summer’s performances are Hairspray through June 24th and Ripper in August – summer shows are performed at Deb Fennel Auditorium at Tigard High School. The 2011 teen theater workshop presents Fiddler On The Roof Jr in August, also at Deb Fennel Auditorium. Shows in Tigard offer exceptional value for families on a budget and a wonderful opportunity to afford and enjoy Broadway musical productions. Best Western hotels are proud to be among the lodging options for those looking for hotels in Tigard.
McMinnville is another option for travelers looking for destinations outside Portland. Located about 45 minutes southwest of the city. It is also equal distance to Salem, Oregon’s state capital. McMinnville is in the heart of Yamhill wine country – an ideal location to relax and visit the many wineries and tasting rooms. Visit in July and don’t miss Turkey Rama – the community celebration of its Turkey Industry. The Yamhill County Fair is hosted in August along with a 3-day NPRA Rodeo. - Metro Portland has a lot to see and do this summer.
