Visiting Southern Oregon

Southern Oregon is home to Oregon’s Outback, with the Tallest Town in Oregon, as well as the Hang Gliding Capital of the World. And to see it all, just make visit to Lakeview. For outdoor winter recreation to visit Warner Canyon Ski Area, 10 miles north of downtown Lakeview. Owned by Lake County and run by local Fremont Highlander Ski Club, Warner Canyon is open 17 weeks during winter and is known for reasonable lift ticket prices, no lift lines, and wide open slopes.

Mt. Ashland Ski Area, arguably more well known that Warner Canyon Ski Area, is another option for southern Oregon winter recreation. Located 20 miles south of Ashland west of Interstate 5 on Mt. Ashland. Marking 50 years of operation with the 2013-2014 season, Mt. Ashland is regularly open Thursdays through Mondays, with evening skiing January through mid-march on Thursday and Friday.

Chances are the holidays brought a taste of Medford in the form of a treat from Harry & David. Visitors to Medford can tour the Harry & David factory for a look at how their famous treats are made. Take exit 27 off Interstate 5 and join a tour Monday through Friday at Harry & David Country Village.

15 miles south of Medford in Ashland, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is nearly a year round event. After a break for the holidays, OSF launches the 2014 at the Angus Bowmer Theatre with The Tempest on February 14th. Also at the Bowmer, the Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window is on February 15th, then the Cocoanuts begins February 16th. The Thomas Theatre Launches 2014 with The Comedy of Errors on February 20th and Water by the Spoonful on March 26th.

Ashland hosts the 13th Annual Ashland Independent Film Festival April 3rd through 7th. The 2014 festival features all genres of short and feature length independent films. AIFF takes over Ashland’s art-deco Varsity Theatre for screenings of over 80 films during the festival.

The sister communities of Brookings and Harbor, on Oregon’s southern coast, are the places for winter whale watching. Prime season is January through March and the temperate climate makes Brookings a great escape. In the heart of Oregon’s Banana Belt, it is still wise to bring clothing to layer.
