Visiting Southern Oregon
Southern Oregon is home to Crater Lake National Park, the Beaver State’s only National Park. With spring and summer, gateway cities to Crater Lake blossom with activity and authentic Oregon outdoor fun and adventures.
Lakeview, at 4800 feet above sea level, is often called Oregon’s tallest town. Home of Warner Canyon Ski Area, spring brings the transition from skiing and snowboarding snow packed slopes to hiking and mountain biking. Adventure north of Lakeview 15 miles to Abert Rim for an outdoor hike to the rim and to view the petroglyphs on the east side of the lake.
From Abert Rim you will see hang gliders launching off Tague’s Butte rising to the south – take note hang gliders, the hang rating for Tague’s Butte is advanced. The Lakeview area is a popular hang gliding destination, with Black Cap offering the closest launching point from downtown where a flag offers gliders wind directions at all times. Look for the Umpteenth Annual Festival of Free Flight, a July 4th Lakeview tradition.
Klamath Falls, 85 miles west of Lakeview, launches summer fun with the Klamath Kinetic Challenge. Veterans Park hosts a weekend of family fun June 27th through 29th. The 2014 Klamath Kinetic Challenge features a unique and crazy race of human powered art & engineering. The Kinetic Sculpture Race takes the inventive human powered creations over land, sand, rocks, and through muck and water to the delight of all involved.
June also brings opening day for the Klamath Falls Gems 2014 season. Enjoy a day at historic Kiger Stadium with family and friends enjoying Gems baseball. The 2014 season runs through August 10th – remember Mondays are kids night, kids get in free all season on Mondays.
Medford, the county seat of Oregon’s Jackson County, is in the heart of southern Oregon’s Rogue River Valley. Ashland, 15 miles south of Medford, is the place to celebrate the Fourth of July. The 2014 theme is This Land is Our Land, with events featuring the parade, fireworks and a day of fun in Lithia Park.
