Summer Fun in Southern Oregon

Travel Tips for Southern Oregon Visitors | Summer 2015

Southern Oregon gets more summer sunshine than the rest of the state, and communities along the Beaver State’s southern border respond by hosting more special events and festivals than any other time of year. From Brookings to Ashland to Lakeview, summer fun is in high gear and visitors are invited to join in.

It’s the perfect time of year for Brookings visitors to visit Harris Beach State Park. In addition to magnificent views of the Pacific tide, the park is exceptional for wildlife viewing. Seals and sea lions are known to make appearances and Bird Island, also known as Goat Island, is a National Wildlife Sanctuary set just offshore. It’s a preferred breeding ground for an array of rare birds, including the tufted puffin.

Ashland Creek

You don’t have to be a Southern Oregon University student to appreciate the sense of freedom summer brings, and Ashland provides visitors with plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

Ashland Creek's babbling waters and make for a pleasant day outdoors for kids and adults alike, and particularly nice stretches are found in Lithia Park and Ashland Creek Park. Both are located right in town and Lithia provides playground equipment, tennis courts, picnic areas, and more.

Ashland is well known as host of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the 2015 season is underway. This year’s highlights include Much Ado About Nothing, which runs now through November 1st at the Angus Bowner Theatre, and The Count of Monte Cristo, which fans can enjoy through October 11th at the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.

See big stars perform under the stars this summer at the Britt Pavilion in Medford, Ashland’s neighbor to the north. An eclectic mix of some of music’s most established names make tour stops at the outdoor amphitheater this season – headliners include Smash Mouth on June 21st, Ben Folds on July 5th, and Weird Al Yankovic on September 2nd.

To the far east, the people of Lakeview know how to have fun this time of year. Brave visitors can take part in the Umpteenth Annual Festival of Free Flight on July 3rd and 4th. Launch spots for the 2015 iteration of this popular hang gliding and paragliding event are located on either side of the Oregon-California border.
