VISITING SOUTHERN OREGON
Travel Tips for Southern Oregon Visitors | Winter 2015-2016
Winter in southern Oregon. Opportunities for cold-weather outdoor activities abound and communities from the coastal enclave of Brookings to the easterly town of Lakeview are as welcoming as ever, inviting visitors to join in a variety of family-friendly fun in the form of festivals, holiday celebrations, arts and cultural events, and more.
It's not too late to explore southern Oregon's pristine landscape – and the countless unique attractions within – by embarking on a scenic driving tour. This season, day-trippers will find plenty of reasons to stop and stretch their legs in towns from Lakeview to Medford to Grants Pass. And as temperatures continue to fall and snow comes along with, a ski trip to Ashland and the nearby Mt. Ashland Ski Area is in order. Snowfall is expected to ramp up in January and February.

In the mean time, the people of Ashland are preparing for the holiday season, and it all starts with the 2015 Festival of Light on November 26th. Downtown's Ashland Plaza hosts an evening of entertainment for kids and adults alike, starting at 5 p.m. and culminating in the lighting of over one million lights.
Brookings visitors can head to the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in nearby Crescent City to get some holiday shopping done, December 4th through 6th. The Crescent City Annual Holiday Bazaar promises a wide variety of arts and crafts, baked goods, and handmade gifts. Time your attack to make sure you get the best selection – the market opens at 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday, and noon on Sunday.
Medford visitors can get a rare glimpse into the past when they embark on Free Tours of the Historic Holly Theatre on select Saturdays, starting January 2nd. The Holly is the largest remaining grand movie palace in the area.
Of course, for theater fans who want to go even further back, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is as popular an Ashland staple as ever. The 2016 season starts late February, with Twelfth Night opening at the Angus Bowmer Theatre on the 19th and the Yeomen of the Guard opening on the 24th at the Thomas Theatre.
